You want to expand the usable space in your home, and you are looking around. Suddenly you realize that you have a vast area just waiting…the garage. Filled with storage items, supplies, and various odds and ends, it can become the extra room or even rooms you are interested in. Imagine the space empty and take a look at your Ottawa garage flooring. Working from the bottom up, you can create a new living area in your garage.

Things you should consider when improving your garage

Clearing Out

First, you need to look at everything that is stored. It may mean going through boxes and deciding what should be donated, what should be discarded, and what you can keep elsewhere. There may still be some items that you need to leave in the space, but find some room for them temporarily so that you can get your garage into shape for habitation.

Plan and Decide

Once you can fully see the space available, you need to decide how to use it. It can become a multipurpose room with an area for work and an area for the kids to play so that you can monitor them and still get some projects out. It can also become an extra bedroom or a man cave. It is up to you.

Design

Consider how storage will work as you look at your cleared space and the items that will need to return. Remember you have walls and even a ceiling. You can install shelving and hang items from the ceiling (like a bicycle or seed spreader).

Electrical outlets are the next concern. Be sure there are enough or places where you need them. It might be a good idea to schedule a visit from an electrician to upgrade the current outlets and add some more. It may take another breaker in the basement, so you won’t have to deal with blackouts.

Overhead lighting is probably another job for your electrician. That small bulb that is fine for filling the trash bin won’t work if you need to read a computer screen or handle woodworking projects.

Floor Renovation

The next step is to thoroughly clean the garage floor. A good sweep will rid the dust and leaves. Tackle the automotive drips by using the proper products. After the floor is very clean, you can decide how to coat it.

Now you can have the floors coated with epoxy resin. This will refresh the floor and even give it a new appearance. You have a number of colours to choose from as well as finishes like matte or glitter. It will take between 24 and 48 hours to cure completely, but then you are ready to go.

One of the advantages of an epoxy coating is that it can be made slip-resistant. By adding some aggregate to the epoxy mix, you will worry less about slips and falls and a better footing, especially since you will be spending much more time here.

While there are some really good DIY videos available, to be sure it is completed correctly, hire a professional. The extra expense will be worth it in the long run.
