Polyurea Polyaspartic One Day Coating Systems

Considering all the options available for coating your garage, polyurea polyaspartic floor coatings has created quite a craze!! This relatively new epoxy alternative coating system has become the favorite of installers. The incredible curing ability of this system is marketed as the best available. Epoxies are the garage floor favourite now this new flooring has come in and it has everyone questioning the validity of this new material and the reasoning behind its’ popularity. We have the answers to these questions and more…..

What are Polyurea Polyaspartic Coatings?

Polyurea is a subgroup of polyurethane. Like epoxy, this compound is a 2-part component that mixes with a catalyst to cause the curing reaction. It has little VOC’s and is more flexible than epoxy. This material has an extremely fast cure rate. The compound cures in less than five seconds and hardens in less than five minutes. Because of this, most polyureas require specialized equipment for installation.

What is polyaspartic? Technically a polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea. Basically, polyaspartics slow the cure rate of polyurea. This allows the user to apply the coating in a more traditional manner. Essentially, all polyaspartics are a polyurea, but not all polyureas are a polyaspartic.  Therefore, when you see a garage floor coating advertised as a polyurea or polyurea polyaspartic it is in fact a form of polyaspartic coating.

Benefits of Polyaspartic Coatings

Polyurea polyaspartic garage floor coating can be applied in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius to as high as 140 degrees Celsius depending on the mixture. This means that this type of coating can be applied in the abrasive summer weather or harsh winter climate. Not only can this coating withstand severe weather it can also be installed in one day. This allows the user to return to full floor usage the following day.

Other benefits to a polyurea polyaspartic floor coating includes the following:
  • 100% U.V. stable and doesn’t yellow
  • Ability to repel moisture from the concrete
  • High gloss finish
  • Abrasion and scratch resistant
  • Stain and chemical resistance.
  • High heat tolerance
  • Little to no VOC’s.
  • High impact resistance.

Installation Factors

Not all concrete is the same. The standards of concrete curing vary across the nation. Before choosing this coating, system consider the porosity and moisture transmission of your concrete. Although polyurea polyaspartic flooring systems have a variety of benefits, it isn’t flawless. Polyurea polyaspartics are not moisture mitigating, meaning the coating delaminates when moisture gets trapped under the coating. Depending on the moisture level in your concrete, this type of flooring may not be the best choice for your flooring needs.

Before installing flooring, you must consider your installation time. If it is pertinent that the flooring system must be installed as soon as possible then a polyurea polyaspartic would be the best choice. Polyurea polyaspartic coatings can be installed and then within twenty-four hours you can return to normal use.

Another factor that affects installation is weather conditions. If you are in a cold climate and your flooring needs can not wait for the warmer weather then, polyurea polyaspartic coating is the best possible coating system for you.
